THE CEREMONY OF NANGLUK MERANA

Once upon a time in java , there was a wise king his name was Batara Siwa .  He had three sons. They were kings in the different places in bali.

The first son lived in mount agung, his name was batara agung . He enjoyed taking care of his cattle. There was goats, chickens, pigs, cows, horses, and any other animals in his barn.

The second son lived by sea. His name was batara andakasa. He loved fish very much. He could spend hours looking at the fish in the sea.

And the youngest son was batara batur. He enjoyed farming. There were many kinds of trees in his fields.

All the three sons lived peacefully and happily. The people in bali were so happy to have them as the kings.

However , the peaceful life was disturbed. There was an incident. Batara agung's cattle went to batara batur's fields . The animals ate the fruits, leaves and left the fields in a mess.

Batara batur was angry , when he knew that his farm was in a terrible condition. He ordered his soldiers to kill the animals. He did not know that those were batara agung's casttle.

Batara agung was also angry when he knew his animals were murdered. He went to batara batur's palace.

''Why did you kill my cattle? You can just ask them to leave! And why don't you put fences around your fields?" said batara agung.

"I did not know that they were your cattle. By the way, why don't you feed them properly? They were hungry then they went to my fields!''

Batara agung knew it was part of his mistake too. However he did not want to admit it. Instead , he cursed it. '' I hope those dead animals will rot and produce bad smell!''

It happened! The dead animals in batara batur's field rotted and the smell was terrible. People could not stand it.

''We have to throw them away to the sea!'' ordered batara batur.

The sea was polluted by the dead animals. The seawater smelled so bad. The dead animals produced poison and that killed the fish!

Batara andakasa was angry. When he knew that the sea was polluted by the dead animals thrown by batara batur, he went to batara batur's palace.

'' You should have buried the dead animals !'' said batara andakasa

He was so angry , he then cursed the dead animals.

'' I hope those dead animals will change into pests and destroyed the farms!''

Unfortunately it happened! The dead animals in the sea changed into pests. They all destroyed the trees in the fields .

Batara siwa heard about the problem. He advised his sons live peacetully and help one another.

However the pests already multiplied and they attacked orther fields. To solve the problem , batara siwa asked batara batur to apologize to batara andakasa.

He asked batara batur to go to the sea bring some offerings.

Batara batur did it. He hoped batara andakasa would forgive him and the trees would grow well. Batara andakasa forgave him. However he asked batara batur to regulary bring the offerings to the sea.

The habit still happens until now. People name it as nangluk merana ceremony. It is held in order to prevent the farms from the pests.

UPACARA NANGLUK MERANA

Sekali waktu di Jawa, ada seorang raja yang bijaksana namanya Batara Siwa. Ia memiliki tiga anak. Mereka adalah raja di tempat yang berbeda di Bali.

Anak pertama tinggal di Gunung Agung, namanya Batara Agung. Ia menikmati mengurus ternaknya. Ada kambing, ayam, babi, sapi, kuda, dan hewan lainnya di gudangnya.

Putra kedua hidup di laut. Namanya Batara Andakasa. Ia mencintai ikan sangat banyak. Dia bisa menghabiskan berjam-jam melihat ikan di laut.

Dan anak bungsu adalah Batara Batur. Ia menikmati pertanian. Ada banyak jenis pohon di ladang.

Semua tiga anak hidup damai dan bahagia. Orang-orang di Bali sangat senang memiliki mereka sebagai raja.

Namun, kehidupan damai terganggu. Ada kecelakaan. Ternak batara Agung ini pergi ke ladang Batara Batur ini. Binatang makan buah, daun dan meninggalkan ladang berantakan.

Batara Batur marah, ketika ia tahu bahwa pertanian berada dalam kondisi yang mengerikan. Ia memerintahkan prajuritnya untuk membunuh binatang. Dia tidak tahu bahwa mereka adalah ternak Batara Agung.

Batara Agung juga marah ketika ia tahu hewan itu dibunuh. Ia pergi ke istana Batara Batur.

'' Kenapa kau membunuh sapi saya? Anda hanya dapat meminta mereka untuk meninggalkan! Dan kenapa tidak anda menempatkan pagar di sekitar ladang? "kata Batara Agung.

"Aku tidak tahu bahwa mereka ternak anda. Omong-omong, kenapa tidak anda memberi mereka makan dengan benar? Mereka lapar maka mereka pergi ke ladang saya! ''

Batara Agung tahu itu adalah bagian dari kesalahannya juga. Namun ia tidak mau mengakuinya. 

Sebaliknya, dia mengutuk itu. '' Saya berharap mereka hewan yang mati akan membusuk dan menghasilkan bau! ''

Itu terjadi! Hewan yang mati di lapangan batara batur yang membusuk dan bau mengerikan. Orang tidak tahan.

'' Kita harus membuangnya ke laut! '' Memerintahkan Batara Batur.

Laut itu tercemar oleh hewan mati. Air laut yang berbau begitu buruk. Hewan mati yang diproduksi racun dan yang membunuh ikan!

Batara Andakasa marah. Ketika ia tahu bahwa laut itu tercemar oleh hewan mati yang dilemparkan oleh batara Batur, ia pergi ke istana Batara Batur.

'' Anda harus mengubur hewan mati! '' Kata batara andakasa

Ia sangat marah, ia kemudian mengutuk hewan mati.

'' Saya berharap mereka binatang mati akan berubah menjadi hama dan menghancurkan peternakan! ''

Sayangnya itu terjadi! Hewan mati di laut berubah menjadi hama. Mereka semua hancur pohon-pohon di ladang.

Batara Siwa mendengar tentang masalah. Ia menyarankan anak-anaknya hidup damai dan membantu satu sama lain.

Namun hama sudah dikalikan dan mereka menyerang ladang lainnya. Untuk memecahkan masalah, Batara Siwa meminta Batara Batur meminta maaf Kepada Batara Andakasa.

Ia meminta Batara Batur untuk pergi ke laut membawa beberapa persembahan.

Batara Batur melakukannya. Ia berharap Batara Andakasa akan memaafkannya dan pohon-pohon akan tumbuh dengan baik. Batara Andakasa memaafkannya. Namun ia meminta Batara Batur untuk secara tetap membawa persembahan ke laut.

Kebiasaan masih terjadi sampai sekarang. Orang menamai itu sebagai Upacara Nangluk Merana. Itu diadakan dalam rangka untuk mencegah pertanian dari hama.

Resolution

Batara siwa advised his sons live peacefully and help another. But, the pests already multiplied and they attacked other fields. To solve the problem, Batara siwa asked batara batur to apologize to batara andakasa. Batara batur went to the sea and bring some offerings. He  hoped batata andakasa would forgive him and the trees would grow well.  And batara andakasa forgave batara batur. But, batara andakasa asked batara batur to regularly bring the offerings to the sea.
